I had really always been seeking the truth since I was fourteen years old. I studied the most varied teachings one after another, but none of them could satisfy my inward desire. At the front during the war, and on my return home, the questions, What am I? What is life? presented themselves to consciousness with even more force. Nowhere could I find an answer. Nothing but disappointment was the result of my seeking.

One morning in the spring of 1920 I was sitting at a window in the home of my parents. My desire for Truth had reached its highest point, the effect of weeks of brooding; I felt impelled to pray like a child: God, art Thou? Then reveal Thyself to me unmistakably! At that moment the morning sun broke through the clouds. In the dusky room a golden shine caught my eye. I went to see the cause of this strange shine and found a black volume with the golden imprint: "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The last word of the title had an unpleasant effect upon me. But then the thought came to me: Has perhaps a higher power, God, caused me to see this book? I decided to put it to the test and began to read and my attention was riveted. I continued to read, but did not get farther than the first two or three pages. Again and again I felt impelled to read the wonderful, significant words. I was filled with a joy such as I had never before known, so that I was conscious of nothing else.

Since that day eight years have passed; and my joy has remained with me all that time, and my sense of happiness and gratitude for Christian Science has increased daily. Christian Science has not only restored my mental poise, but has also proved to be an ever present and the only true help in many cases. A few years ago I awoke one morning with a very heavy head. Very soon pain manifested itself and grew worse from hour to hour. For three days and three nights the condition remained about the same, and I could not sleep. A double tooth and the right side of my head were especially affected. As vacation time was just commencing I went to my parents' home in Hamburg. I arrived there in a miserable condition. I asked my mother at once for Christian Science treatment, went to bed, and began to read the textbook. When I awoke in the morning I felt better than I had done in a long time. Full of joy, I began to whistle a lively song. That was my first experience of healing through Christian Science treatment.
