Dedication

There is an intimate connection between the dedication of Christian Science churches, free from debt, and the dedication of the daily lives of Christian Scientists to the demonstration of Godlikeness. A dictionary defines the word "dedicate" in part as, "To devote, as one's self, to a duty or service." Christian Science transforms one's character and mental outlook, and it is apt to influence advantageously the distribution of one's time. One cannot continue in the same old round of purposeless pleasure or anxious toil and at the same time expect to prove the teaching of Christian Science that man is not material, but spiritual.

Mrs. Eddy says that she named this Science "Christian, because it is compassionate, helpful, and spiritual" (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 25). Since this is the nature of Christian Science, then Christian every Scientist who has named its name in his heart, that is, in sincerity, must needs dedicate his life to the expression of compassion, helpfulness, and spirituality. He cannot take the name of Christian Science in vain. Christian Scientists cannot pass by "on the other side," for in the rush and stress of daily life the spirit and ministry of the good Samaritan are just as much needed and welcomed now as of yore.

The Christian Science churches now beautifying cities and villages in many lands stand for the practice of this scientific religion. They are built upon the prayers of those who have been healed and who are healing others; for one whose burden has been lifted in due course becomes a lifter of burdens.
