While I was a guest in the Christian Science Sanatorium...
While I was a guest in the Christian Science Sanatorium in Arden Wood at San Francisco, a sense of gratitude such as I have never before experienced filled my thought. I was carried into the home believing myself a very sick man, suffering from ulcerated stomach accompanied by many complications, including heart trouble. From the moment I entered the portals of this institution I felt the effects of the helpful thought that was all about.
For many weeks I had been unable to eat any food except a light broth or the juice of an orange with the white of an egg. I was weak, discouraged, and somewhat dismayed. The help of a practitioner was sought immediately on my entrance into the Sanatorium; and the work began. It seemed that everyone was eagerly anxious to be helpful, to aid me to realize that my difficulty was not real, not necessary. So completely did this helpfulness saturate my thought that on the fourth day of my visit I was able to dress and attend the Sunday morning service in a wheel chair. During the reading of the Lesson-Sermon that day there came to my consciousness such a clear realization of the distinction between false belief and reality that I was able to return to my room without the aid of the wheel chair, and on the next day I was a guest in the dining room, where I ate a full meal from the regular menu. I was perfectly healed; and I knew then by proof and not theory that the truth as taught in Christian Science and practiced so sincerely in this home does heal quickly, when it is earnestly and intelligently applied.
During the remainder of my four weeks' stay in the Sanatorium my realization of health grew stronger each day, my appetite for food became entirely normal, and I was able to walk out perfectly sound and convinced more than ever before of Jesus' meaning when he said, "Ye must be born again;" for not only had I been healed,—made whole physically,—but the regeneration that had taken place in my consciousness had liberated me from many claims of wrong mental action and given me a wonderful freedom.
