The Rule of Inversion

On pages 282 and 283 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "The rule of inversion infers from error its opposite, Truth; but Truth is the light which dispels error." The specific divine truth about each false mortal belief is at hand to liberate everyone who consistently applies this rule of inversion, making no exceptions. Every individual is within reach of the redeeming power of Christian Science, and there is no night of human experience so dark but that the dawn of spirituality can lighten it. We have but to lift our shades to admit it. There is never a moment when the might of divine Mind, reversing and replacing mortal weakness, is not present to redeem that weakness. But this scientific fact must be clearly seen and continually admitted, if we would benefit by it. The demonstration of Truth entails undeviating denial of everything that is untrue; and the Christian Scientist must be as firm in his denunciation of error as he is in his affirmations of Truth.

To obey this divine rule of inversion means that we must radically and specifically turn from each lie to the specific truth regarding it. If, for instance, beliefs of weakness, impurity, hate, seek to invade our consciousness, we should realize that spiritual strength, purity, and love alone are real, and that they are never subject to inversion, variableness, or cessation. The image of God cannot be the reverse of God.

Divine Love, when earnestly sought as a remedy for all fear, discouragement, or resentment, establishes the fact of its own presence and supporting power. Life is reflected as life, and Love as love. Neither one can be metamorphosed into hate or death. Spirit has never surrendered to matter, nor divine Principle to error. The surrender must always be on the side of falsity. The Christian Scientist therefore ranges himself on the side of reality, which, scientifically speaking, is the only side there is, for, being unconnected with God, nothing untrue has any real existence.
