In 1905, during a severe illness, I was suddenly deprived of my sight. For eight years I sought help from several oculists and two big London hospitals, only to be told that nothing could be done for me, and that I was to look forward to total blindness for the rest of my life.
In 1913 a friend brought me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked me to have it read to me. This was done by my small son for about two weeks. It was the first time I had ever heard of God as Mind, Life, Truth, Love, and this brought me a great sense of joy as I remembered that the first chapter of Genesis says He made man in His image and likeness. Quite suddenly I saw how impossible it was for blindness and other physical troubles, from which I was suffering at that time, or for resentment, discontent, contempt, and discouragement, to be in that Mind, in Life, Truth, Love—God. I saw clearly that they were opposite beliefs of the carnal mind, and rejoiced to feel that at last I had found the truth about God. I had previously opposed all religion because it did not seem practical and could not be proved. Quite suddenly I found my sight was fully restored—I could even see to read. It was the truth about God and man that healed me. I did not even know that there was a church; nor had I ever heard of a practitioner. I did not expect that the reading of the textbook would heal me, but only help me to think rightly, as I had been told all my troubles were due to wrong thinking; and I have proved that this was true.
For the healing and regeneration that Christian Science has brought into my life and home I can never be sufficiently grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, for class instruction by one of Mrs. Eddy's loyal students, and for the privilege of serving the Cause these many years. Our Leader has written, "So shall all earth's children at last come to acknowledge God, and be one; inhabit His holy hill, the God-crowned summit of divine Science" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 133).—
