In a recent issue of the Augusta Chronicle there appeared an article entitled "Let's Think This Over—The Popular Pastime." In this timely and stimulating article the writer states: "Saints and sinners, Republicans, Democrats, wets and drys, Catholics and Christian Scientists, all unite in charging the woes of 1930 to the prohibition amendment of the Constitution of the United States." In this sweeping sentence allow me to make a correction. Whatever others may do, Christian Scientists assuredly do not charge "the woes of 1930 to the prohibition amendment;" but they realize that this amendment is being made a scapegoat, and that the present wave of crime, with all its attendant woes, is brought about by a lawless state of thought.

In a series of twenty articles which appeared in The Christian Science Monitor from May 5 to June 14, 1930, the value of prohibition and the good resulting therefrom were clearly and truthfully elucidated.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook used by Christian Scientists, Mrs. Eddy writes: "The use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science" (p. 454). In "Miscellaneous Writings," on pages 288 and 289, she states: "The cause of temperance receives a strong impulse from the cause of Christian Science; temperance and truth are allies, and their cause prospers in proportion to the spirit of Love that nerves the struggle. People will differ in their opinions as to means to promote the ends of temperance; that is, abstinence from intoxicating beverages. ... Strong drink is unquestionably an evil, and evil cannot be used temperately: its slightest use is abuse; hence the only temperance is total abstinence."
