An article in your issue of July 27 gave misleading views concerning Mary Baker Eddy and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," of which Mrs. Eddy is the author, and I should appreciate an opportunity to present accurate data regarding the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and of her book, Science and Health.

Mrs. Eddy came from a family of distinction in a community of hardy New Englanders. Her father, respected in his home state, was prominent in church affairs and was chaplain of the New Hampshire state militia. Governor Pierce of New Hampshire was his friend and a visitor at his home. Mrs. Eddy's brother Albert attended Dartmouth College and studied law in the office of Franklin Pierce, who was later President of the United States. After serving two terms in the state legislature, her brother was nominated for Congress but passed on before the election.

A fair concept of Mrs. Eddy's early reading may be gained from "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 10), where she says, "At ten years of age I was as familiar with Lindley Murray's Grammar as with the Westminster Catechism; and the latter I had to repeat every Sunday. My favorite studies were natural philosophy, logic, and moral science. From my brother Albert I received lessons in the ancient tongues, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin." Additional light on her perspicacity and intelligence may be found in "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy," by Sibyl Wilbur, which states that the Reverend Enoch Corser, of the Tilton Congregational Church, regarded Mary Baker as his special pupil and the brightest he ever had.
