Christian Science was introduced to me about eleven...
Christian Science was introduced to me about eleven years ago by a younger member of the family, the seed being sown by one of his schoolmates, who attended a Christian Science Sunday School. At that time I was suffering from a stomach disturbance, for the correction of which I had submitted to a major operation seven years previously. The operation, it is only fair to say, did give me relief for a period of five to six years; but at the time Christian Science was introduced I was suffering from the return of many of the old symptoms, and thoughts of another operation were frequently entertained. I purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and was at once deeply impressed with its teaching of only one perfect cause, one divine Principle, as the basis of all true being.
At the end of a week, during which time I read the book studiously and almost constantly, omitting all medicine, I realized to my astonishment that I was entirely free of all the distressing symptoms, which before had been so pronounced, and that now all physical functioning was normal and harmonious. I remember whispering to myself, "Wonderful! Wonderful! Isn't it wonderful!" At that time I was not sufficiently familiar with the Bible to know the verse from Isaiah, "Unto us a child is born ... and his name shall be called Wonderful." No practitioner was employed in this instance.
Since that healing it has been proved to me beyond doubt that, as Christian Science teaches, the reason of the physical disturbance was an inharmonious mental state; for I have had a slight return of one or another of the symptoms, and in each case, upon self-analysis, have found that I had been harboring worry, fear, resentment, discouragement, a great sense of disappointment, or some other phase of the carnal mind; but when the wrong thought was corrected and a harmonious mental state restored, the physical disturbances also vanished. How invaluable is this enlightenment!
