Healing through Reflection

Of the metaphysical healing method practiced by Christ Jesus, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 259 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that he "threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor though-models would allow,—thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying." Is not that an authoritative example of Christian Science healing?

Sometimes students, especially those young in Christian Science, although recognizing that God is the only healer of all our diseases, are nevertheless puzzled as to what there is for the practitioner to do, or just how it is that one individual can help another in the way of healing. This will be clearer when we realize that man, being idea, the image and likeness of God, can do nothing except by reflection of divine activity. It is God who heals; but, according to the difference in understanding of two individuals, the consciousness of the one at a given moment may reflect God's healing power more clearly than that of the other, and by throwing this healing reflection upon the other, blot out the error. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 368): "The confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact that Truth is real and error is unreal," and "Error is a coward before Truth."

God is infinite, perfect, omnipresent Love, and man is the reflection of infinite Love. John tells us that "there is no fear in love." Therefore there can be no fear in Love's reflection. Taking "fear" as a generic term, we may deduce that, likewise, there is no pain in Love or in Love's reflection, man; nor any disease, discord, lack—evil of any kind.
