I am learning through the study and application of Christian Science...
I am learning through the study and application of Christian Science to know God—God who is Love; and as I strive to correct erroneous thoughts—to overcome hatred, resentment, and fear—I experience happiness, peace, and good health, and realize that these are permanent.
Over nine years ago I was bedridden for two months, after submitting to an operation which seemed to make conditions worse instead of better. The physicians consulted said they could do no more to help me. I knew nothing of Christian Science, but, having heard that it healed, I asked a practitioner for help and was healed instantaneously. I am so thankful and happy to know that health is spiritual and not dependent on material conditions.
I want to tell of the healing of an internal injury which my son experienced four years ago. The boy, then seven years old, fell some distance, landing on his side on a rock. He complained at the time of the fall, but was able to go to school for a few days. Suddenly he became very ill. There was high fever, blood passed, and there was much swelling and discoloration in his side and down the leg to the knee. He suffered a great deal, the leg drew up, and he could not stand erect. A Christian Science practitioner worked for the child, but the condition continued for five weeks. I spent by far the greater part of my time studying the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I protected the child from the eyes of other members of the family.
One morning, when my thought was filled with fear and discouragement, I went to the practitioner's home, hoping to get a clearer thought of Christian Science. A frightened maid had said that she had seen a child similarly injured, and that he had been in a hospital for nine months. The wrong thought resulting from her remark had stayed with me; but when I stated this to the practitioner, it was immediately corrected, my thought was cleared, and the light began to break through the darkness. I went home, realizing the way was becoming brighter. I opened "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read these words (p. 333): "Where art thou, O mortal! who turnest away from the divine source of being,—calling on matter to work out the problem of Mind, to aid in understanding and securing the sweet harmonies of Spirit that relate to the universe, including man?" All fear left me and I was happy. The next day the child was dressed and could walk about the room, although there was still a slight limp. He improved rapidly, and with the beginning of the sixth week he was in school, although the discoloration did not leave for several weeks. There was a precious lesson in that experience, and it always stands out to me when discouragement tries to creep into my thought during trials, or when illness seems real and stubborn.
So-called children's diseases have been quickly overcome, as well as influenza, dysentery with extreme weakness which recurred every summer, tonsillitis, an abscessed jaw after two teeth had been drawn, accompanied by high fever and much swelling and discoloration of the face.
I want to express my gratitude for the kindness and patience shown by the practitioner, who was always ready to help me, and who offset my fear with words of courage and comfort. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for the privilege of teaching in the Sunday school. I am most grateful to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
