Twenty-one years ago I turned unreservedly to Christian Science for help, aften ten years spent in search of health through various material systems, including several serious operations, all of which had left me in a pitiful state of fear and weakness. The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been lent to me a few months before, was read hungrily, but its teachings were not entirely accepted until the last spell of illness in July of that year. The transformation which took place then after a few treatments was wonderful. I emerged from nervous semi-invalidism, afflicted with chronic intestinal overaction and bladder trouble, together with other ailments, to strong, healthy womanhood, free from these complaints, able to work hard, sleep well, and take up the duties of a full, useful life.
During the succeeding years I have kept to that record with no omission, except for a testing time early in my study, when typhoid or malarial fever carried me almost over the brink; but through the loving ministrations of a Christian Science practitioner Truth prevailed, and I was surer than ever that the Christ-method, as set forth in Christian Science, is the best way of healing.
As he advances, the student of Christian Science begins to see more and more the wisdom of our Leader in establishing her church and its activities as she did, for there is healing in all of them for us all. When I began to study, there was no place in our house to be alone. It was pointed out to me that the Reading Rooms met that need; and thereafter, many times, quiet and peace from the turmoil of the outside world were found in them. Teaching in the Sunday school was hard when I was a beginner, but by being obedient and trusting God to be His own interpreter, I gained much instruction in humility and simplicity. Singing the hymns has many times inspired me, lifting me above depression and discouragement. The messages coming through the periodicals and lectures have brought me physical healing and strength to go through what seemed a wilderness experience. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, as Second Reader, for three years at every Sunday service; for the opportunity it gave for overcoming obstacles; and for our Leader's insight in establishing the rule of rotation in office. There has been great protection through daily study of the Bible and the textbook in connection with the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly, for this study has taught me to think scientifically. I cannot stop without speaking of the activity of the practitioners who are giving their best efforts to help others. There are no words to express the gratitude I feel for living in this time, and for having the Christian Science church and its activities available to us.—(Mrs.) Adelaide Rogers Calkins, Tacoma, Washington.
