In your issue of April 29 there appeared under "Readers' Views" a letter by "Faith and Freedom" entitled "Religion and Dogma." I shall be glad if you will publish the following reply.
Christian Scientists will agree with "Faith and Freedom" that human language is inadequate to express God and that mortal mind cannot understand Deity. Mrs. Eddy makes this very clear in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 349, when she says, "The chief difficulty in conveying the teachings of divine Science accrately to human thought lies in this, that like all other languages, English is inadequate to the expression of spiritual conceptions and propositions, because one is obliged to use material terms in dealing with spiritual ideas;" and, page 481: "Material sense never helps mortals to understand Spirit, God. Through spiritual sense only, man comprehends and loves Deity."
Christian Science is teaching mankind how to cultivate this spiritual sense in order to understand the nature of God. Christian Science is defined as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1). The Principle of Christian Science is God. Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, proved by his healing works that his understanding or true knowledge of God was demonstrable; therefore scientific.
