"I am not alone"

In the garden of Gethsemane our beloved Master and Way-shower, Christ Jesus, proved for the benefit of all mankind the utter futility of depending upon aught but God for support. On page 48 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written of the disciples' neglect of their beloved Friend and Teacher in his hour of woe, as follows: "His students slept. He said unto them: 'Could ye not watch with me one hour?' ... There was no response to that human yearning, and so Jesus turned forever away from earth to heaven, from sense to Soul." We read that Jesus said to his disciples just before the crucifixion, "Behold, the hour ... is now come, that ye ... shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me." Jesus turned from all human dependence to his divine Principle, God, infinite, ever present Love, for help; and he was sustained throughout the ordeal of the cross and the tomb.

Jesus' demonstrations were examples for the benefit of all mankind; for did he not say, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also"? And in Science and Health (p. 37) Mrs. Eddy says, "It is possible,—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman,—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness." It logically follows that students of Christian Science must eventually turn completely from matter to Spirit.

Those who are struggling with a sense of separation from loved ones, or of lonesomeness, may find comfort and healing by applying the rules of Christian Science. The thought kept repeating itself to a young student that if he could only find a home with Christian Scientists he would gain a better understanding of Christian Science. One day the "still small voice" gently whispered that if he wanted the companionship of the good and faithful he could find the best that the world knew right in his room, in the prophets, Jesus, the disciples, in Mrs. Eddy's writings, and in the Christian Science periodicals. These were always available and ever ready to help him, if he only turned to them. This divine message enabled the student to turn more lovingly and gratefully to his books and periodicals instead of to persons for comfort and companionship; and this right dependence has never failed him.
