The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Weston-Super-Mare, England (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Frank Hodgson, who said:—

Christian Science comes with a vital message, pointing the way to freedom from fear, sickness, and sin. It was about thirty years ago that Christian Science came into my life. At that time I was sick and discouraged beyond measure, having suffered constantly for three years. I visited several doctors and tried many kinds of treatment, but in vain. The last doctor I visited told me that I should not live very long. It was then that I came across an article on Christian Science in one of the daily papers, and I turned to it as a last resort. In a very short time my health was restored, and the healing has been permanent. For thirty years I have not tasted medicine. With the physical healing came the spiritual awakening which Christian Science always brings, beckoning me on to overcome sin and self, and to follow the Christ. Throughout the world to-day men and women are being brought out of the bondage of sickness and sin through a knowledge of the goodness and almighty power of God.

University City, Missouri (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Arthur S. Pentland, who said:—

Christian Science was presented to me a number of years ago when in great need of physical healing. I was suffering from an acute condition of stomach trouble for which I failed to receive relief through the usual methods of treatment. I was asked to consult a Christian Science practitioner. This I did, and after several treatments and a few weeks' reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, found myself completely well, so much so that there has never been a return of the condition. This healing impressed me so much that I began an earnest study of the subject. I found through this study that my healing was not the result of some peculiar set of circumstances, but was because of the proper application of a fixed law of God which was ever operating and was eternally producing harmony.

Detroit, Michigan (Fourth Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange; introduced by Charles H. Mclntyre, who said:—

On page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science" Mary Baker Eddy defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." When we learn in Christian Science man's true relationship to God, then it is not difficult to understand that harmony in man is natural, and should be the commonly accepted fact. It is man's rightful heritage to enjoy health, happiness, and harmony. We find that conditions of inharmony and discord are unnatural and unreal, and those who are struggling with problems of lack, sickness, or any other form of discord can find their healing in Christian Science. To-day there are many people in our midst who stand as living witnesses to the healing power of this truth.

Portland, Oregon (Second Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Mrs. Jennie Y. Maxwell, who said:—

I, like many others, found myself a few years ago so weary laboring with a mortal sense of life, that there seemed to be nothing really worth while to live for, and I became so depressed mentally that I was a nervous wreck and entertained thoughts of self-destruction. Then Christian Science found me, and in the words of the book of Revelation, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away." My whole concept of life had beautifully changed, and it has been a great privilege to live and to serve ever since my awakening.

As I was very hungry for the truth about God and man's relation to Him, and how to pray aright, by diligently and joyously studying the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in a very few days I experienced a peace of consciousness that I had never known before, and which can be acquired in no other way. Ever since that time Christian Science has been my only physician, meeting my every need when rightly applied, and it will do likewise for every other earnest, honest seeker for Truth. On page 55 of Science and Health are found these words: "The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing."
