In 1913, Christian Science was first brought to my notice by my wife, who borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read a considerable part of it, but could not understand how healing was brought about. At the same time I was glad to find that in her book Mrs. Eddy had answered many questions that from time to time had confused me when reading the Bible. For this I was truly grateful, because I had questioned ministers upon these points, but they could not explain them.
About this time, 1914, the world war had commenced. Together with some friends I undertook the duty of helping in the work of entertaining those of our men who were looked after by the Australian Y.M.C.A., at a theater in London. While I was there my right foot became helpless; all its former spring and usefulness seemed gone, and I was assured by a fellow worker that I was suffering from neuritis in the ankle joint. I was healed of this difficulty instantaneously by the understanding of a Christian Science practitioner whose loving help I sought. On another occasion I was healed of an irritating disease which afflicted me near the joints in both my legs and my arms. It seemed at the time the most distressing pain I had been called upon to bear.
As the strain of the war increased and the circumstances resulting therefrom grew constantly worse, I began to feel the mental strain more than I could endure. In 1926, I suffered a serious nervous breakdown, becoming a mental wreck. Again I was placed under the care of a practitioner; but when I was apparently in the most serious condition the services of a medical man were sought, on the urgent request of members of my family. On learning the cause of my condition, he advised that I should be placed in an institution for people in an unsound mental state. My wife would not consent to this, and cheerfully undertook the duty of caring for me at home, although the doctor stated that this was a great risk and would be very dangerous for her. The faithful practitioner went on with the work, and in a few months the complete healing came. During these months the doctor called now and then, but through the whole course of the trouble never ordered any medicine.
