In your issue of November 1, a correspondent, "Bible Christian,"...
Stratford Mirror
In your issue of November 1, a correspondent, "Bible Christian," has undertaken to criticize Christian Science, and to dispute certain statements made by a lecturer during his lecture in Stratford on October 27, and reported in part in the Stratford Beacon-Herald of October 28. Christian Scientists do not interfere with the conscientious religious beliefs of others, and I have no desire or intention now of entering upon a religious controversy. The purpose of this letter is to correct possible misunderstanding on points referred to by our critical friend.
The lecturer pointed out very definitely that "fear is the belief in a power apart from God," and sometimes a belief in a power even greater than God. He went on to show conclusively how such a false belief can be effectively overcome by strict conformance to the law of God, the law of Love. "Perfect love casteth out fear."
Our critic disputes our right to refer to Mrs. Eddy as the Leader of the Christian Science movement. He makes the time-worn assertion that Christian Science is not Christian, and then takes us to task because he mistakenly assumes that we do not fully acknowledge Christ. The Scriptural statements he quotes in support of his contention were made by Christ Jesus on a certain occasion for a specific purpose, and do not in any way conflict with the definition of "leader" given in any good dictionary, as for instance, "one who precedes and is followed by others in conduct, opinion, understanding, etc.; the chief of a party, sect, or following."—Webster. Christian Scientists will quite properly continue to acknowledge Mrs. Eddy as their Leader, and in so doing will neither lessen nor limit their appreciation of Christ Jesus.
