Love is Life

When a certain lawyer inquired of the Master how one could inherit eternal life, his reply came in the form of a question: "What is written in the law?" The lawyer then cited the commandment, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself." When the lawyer had repeated the great commandment the Master said, "Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live." Evidently the Master did not consider life as contingent upon the physical body, but regarded the supreme love of God, together with the manifestation of brotherly love, as concurrent with immortal life.

On page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader states that "Life is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit." Obviously, "divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit," cannot sin, sicken, decay, and die. It is therefore imperative that one should look away from the physical body and realize Life as wholly spiritual. As Christian Scientists we understand that the acknowledgment of God as the one Life and the one Love is the only way to conquer sin and death. Life in God means life in good, life manifested through imperishable spiritual ideas. Therefore fear must be overcome, for it is opposed to divine Love and is forever extraneous to Life, God, and His manifestation. Divine Mind entertains no fear on behalf of itself or its ideas.

The beloved disciple wrote: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death." One who is daily thinking truly, lovingly, of all and of himself, is thinking immortally; but whoever is accepting hateful suggestions is thinking falsely, mortally; for every lie is lifeless and must be ruled out of thought. The appearing of true holiness in human consciousness alone causes the disappearance of sin; and because holiness is God's gift to man, we must claim holiness by right of spiritual reflection. To make good this divine right to holiness and immortality, we must in due course totally eliminate from our thought and daily life whatever Christian Science exposes as un-Christlike, opposed to divine Love and Life eternal.
