At the Johannesburg Diocesan Synod certain statements...

Rand Daily Mail

At the Johannesburg Diocesan Synod certain statements were made by the Very Reverend the Dean of Johannesburg that may be misleading to those who are not acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science.

In the first place, the Dean referred to Christian Scientists as seeking the sacraments and the benefit of other rites of the Anglican church. May I say that Christian Scientists do not seek or partake of the sacraments of any other church or denomination. They ask to be marriage by a clergyman of another denomination, but the authority of the church to which approach is made to refuse to perform the ceremony is not questioned.

While appreciating the Dean's desire to reverence other people's reverences, it is felt that his statement that he fails to understand how "people holding the beliefs of Christian Scientists could call themselves a Christian people at all," demands notice. Christ Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them," and Christian Scientists desire only to be judged by this standard.
