When, eight years ago, I left Holland to come to the Dutch East Indies, I made my home with my eldest sister; through whom I heard Christian Science mentioned for the first time. She advised me to go to a testimony meeting with her, and told me some startling examples of healing, which appeared so unbelievable that I made fun of it.

About eight months later I was transferred from Weltevreden to Soerabaia, where I was taken with a very serious kidney trouble and had to be operated on in the hospital. Four doctors attended me during the operation. That I was at death's door was shown by a telegram received by my sister to the effect that the operation would take place but that I had already been given up by four doctors.

She asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me, and absent treatment was given, as I heard afterward. I remember quite well that two of the physicians remarked about the exceedingly successful operation and very speedy recovery. Although I was discharged from the hospital, I still had an open wound from the operation, and when, after a few months, I was again being transferred to Weltevreden, I was in bed with high fever on board ship.
