It is with a great sense of gratitude that I testify to the healing power of Christian Science. During an epidemic of influenza I found myself very suddenly manifesting symptoms of it. I was unable to sit up and was obliged to send for someone to care for me. As it did not yield to my own work in Christian Science, a call for help was sent to a practitioner two hundred miles away. To human sense I was very ill, and a great deal of fear was expressed for me by members of my family and neighbors, as I was eighty-six years of age.
The work was immediately taken up for me, and I was lovingly assured that I dwelt only in the atmosphere of divine Love, and that no fear of influenza could ever develop or function in that atmosphere. I improved from the first treatment. Nothing but the power and presence of God could have restored me to activity and a normal condition of health in so short a time. I was completely and permanently healed, and suffered no after effects. There are no words with which I can express my gratitude for this healing and for many others experienced by me and by members of my family during a period of thirty-five years.
Christian Science came into my life in 1894 during a visit to Boston, at the time the original Mother Church was being built. I had entered a hospital for a serious operation, as a means of relief from a painful condition with which I had suffered for nearly thirty years. Three times, because of circumstances beyond the control of the hospital authorities, the operation was postponed. I had always been a Christian woman and had prayed for wisdom regarding this operation. I now felt sure God had protected me from the surgeon's knife, and I left the hospital, much to the disappointment of my family. I remained in Boston a short time to visit friends. One of them told me of "the new cure" called "Christian Science" and related some of the healings she had witnessed among her family and friends. I knew from the first it was the answer to my prayer. I was taken to a testimony meeting in Chickering Hall, where services were being held until the church edifice was finished. This service made a deep impression upon me, and I was sure I had found the "pearl of great price."
