Understanding and Strength
Mortals unacquainted with divine Science are sadly oblivious to the blessings which God has bestowed on His creation, man. Believing as they do that good and evil are both real, they reap the fruits of good and evil. Thus, at one moment they may find themselves healthy, happy, and contented; at the next, sick, unhappy, sorrowful, and discontented. Furthermore, mortals believe that matter is real. In consequence, they are subject to so-called material law, apparently bound by its limitations.
Christian Science has come to tell men the truth about God, Spirit; about man, His idea; and about the real or spiritual law which governs man, in order to free them from the erroneous material beliefs which claim to bind them to sin and disease, and to limit them in every direction including that of strength. And what is the truth about God, about man, and about God's law which Christian Science reveals? It is that God, Spirit, is infinite and the only real substance; that man, being the reflection of Spirit, is spiritual; and that God's law which governs the relationship between God and man, is the only real law. Further, Christian Science shows that since God is infinite good, man reflects good, and good alone.
As these spiritual truths are perceived, the student becomes aware of the deceptive nature of the physical senses, which appear to inform mortals as to things material. He begins to understand that since Spirit is infinite, matter is unreal, and that the real man is never subject to what is erroneously termed material law. It may seem strange to those who have always believed that matter is real to be told of its utter unreality; but there can be no evading the fact that the truth of God's—Spirit's—infinitude rules out the belief that matter is real.
