Signs of the Times

[Edward Leih Pell, in the Home Quarterly, Nashville, Tennessee]

To make a home you must have the things of the spirit—love and all the beautiful things of love, sacrifice and kindness and gentleness and tenderness and faithfulness and patience, and all the rest. ...

Perhaps, after all, the most important practical rule for the home is Christ's rule of putting first things first. We must seek first—put foremost—the kingdom of God, which in the home means the things of the spirit which make the home. ... We practical moderns are fond of saying that it is all very well to look after people's souls, but that if we don't look after their bodies and souls we shall not get anywhere. But Jesus puts it the other way around; he says that if we will put the needs of the spirit first, all these things—the transient needs of the body—will be added unto us.
