My first healing in Christian Science was an instantaneous...

My first healing in Christian Science was an instantaneous one of blood poisoning in a finger when it was thought that amputation would be necessary. I knew nothing of Christian Science at the time, and this healing seemed so wonderful to me that I began to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. I attended for one year, until I was twenty, and I am grateful for the teaching received there, as it stayed with me during the following years when I seemed to drift away from Christian Science. On entering the business world I could not seem to find my place, so went from one position to another for a period of about seven years. During this time I was very unhappy because of conditions in my family, and my health was greatly impaired. I studied Christian Science intermittently, but did not make much progress.

In January, 1920, I found myself in great need physically and financially. I was out of work and hardly able to work, but I had to have money for my living expenses. At this time I applied for a position with a large corporation, which required all those employed to take a physical examination. I went to a Christian Science practitioner before taking this examination and asked for help, as I was nervous about it. After the examination I asked the doctor if I should report to the gentleman for whom I was to work, and he replied that I could never work for that corporation; but he did not tell me what the difficulty was. I was greatly shocked, for although I knew I was not in good health, I did not believe my condition to be so serious. I returned to the practitioner, and told him what the doctor had said. His reply I found very helpful. He quoted from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" this statement of Mrs. Eddy (p. 86): "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees." He explained that the doctors saw their own beliefs, and that while it was not our privilege to change the doctors' beliefs, I did not have to be governed by them. I then reported to the gentleman who wished to employ me, and gave him a slip from the doctor showing that I had not passed the examination. He was greatly surprised, and to satisfy himself he took me down to the doctors for a further examination. Three of the corporation doctors examined me together, including one specialist, and they all gave the same verdict, that I had tuberculosis and could not live six months.

I felt very much discouraged, but the shock awakened me, and I then and there resolved to take up the study of Christian Science earnestly. The gentleman to whom I was applying for work told me he could not believe what the doctors had said, and stated that he would ask permission of the superintendent to employ me, regardless of the doctors' report. I returned the next day, and was employed at considerably higher wages than I had asked, and I have been there ever since, having had promotion. It is now over ten years since I was first employed.
