Church Building

Every branch church of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, is bound to be faced, sooner or later, with the problem of church building. And it is well that this is so, for as surely as the building of a Christian Science church is based on spiritual understanding, so does the period of church building mean growth both to the individual members and to the Cause of Christian Science in the locality.

It may be that services are held in a hall or hired premises where the needs of the church are being temporarily met, but for a church that is making progress and bringing forth the fruits of Spirit, preaching the gospel and healing the sick, the time is sure to come when members will see the need for a dignified church home of their own, where the many activities of a Church of Christ, Scientist, may be adequately and harmoniously provided for.

One of the first questions likely to arise as members prayerfully consider the problem before them is that of the size and cost of the building. Here it is well to ponder the words of our Master, Christ Jesus, as given in Luke's Gospel: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?" These words are not to be taken as an excuse for a policy of limitation and undue caution, but they may be found useful in directing members to weigh their ability to cope with the problem involved, and not rush ahead into debt in order to put up a structure perhaps larger and more elaborate than is needed. Nevertheless, in determining the question of size and seating accommodation, due consideration should be given to the prospect of normal expansion.
