Spiritual Ideas

That God, divine Mind, expresses Himself in spiritual ideas, which constitute the universe, is a fundamental teaching of Christian Science. Moreover, since divine Mind is always and invariably expressed, or manifested, by these spiritual ideas, to learn of their nature, quality, and substance becomes the necessity, if we would learn about God. In this way alone we may gain an adequate understanding of Deity.

Since God is infinite and perfect, the ideas of divine Mind must be perfect, for nothing which emanates from Him could be less than perfect. When Christ Jesus admonished his followers, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect," he declared the perfection of God the Father, and more than implied that it was possible for his beloved disciples to claim and bring into their present realization the perfection which attaches to the sons of God.

Moreover, since Mind is infinite Spirit, that the ideas of Mind must be spiritual is a logical conclusion; and, obviously, the Spirit which is infinite could by no means find expression in its opposite, matter. In fact, the infinitude of Spirit precludes the possibility of matter as a reality. To supplement infinite Spirit by matter in the form of a material creation is impossible, and to contemplate such a situation is absurd. Consequently, spiritual ideas constitute the universe and they bear no relation whatsoever to materiality, for matter is but a seeming objectification of the so-called mortal mind. But, since this claim of a mind apart from God is an illusion, a falsity, neither does it nor its objectification as matter have the slightest reality. Spiritual ideas bear no slightest relation to material beliefs.
