Before I began to study Christian Science my sister-in-law,...
Before I began to study Christian Science my sister-in-law, who is a Scientist, came to visit me with her daughter. I was taken sick and sent for a doctor. He said I had a high fever, and that he would go to a drug store and send me some medicine, which I was to take at once. A large package of medicine arrived just as my sister-in-law came into the room. I asked her why she had not come in before to see me. She replied, "You sent for a doctor." I told her to get her "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and come and read to me. She did so. In ten minutes I was asleep, and when I woke up I had no fever and never have had since. This was about twelve years ago, and from that day to this I have never tasted a drop of medicine. I at once commenced to study Science and Health.
A short time after this I was loading a basket of about one hundred pounds weight into my car and strained my back. It was very painful, and for over a week I seemed to get no better. We went to a near-by city to attend a Christian Science lecture and stayed with a friend who was a practitioner. I told her I did not want her to treat me; that "God is no respecter of persons." It was on a Saturday when we went home, and on Sunday morning when I started to get up I could not move my legs to get my clothes on. My wife said, "I think we had better send for a practitioner." I told her to wait till evening and that if I was not better I would do so. I went to my office and turned to go into another room when something said: You keep saying God will heal you. Why do you not say God has healed you? I said, "God has healed me;" and I was healed immediately.
From a boy I had smoked. After reading what Mrs. Eddy says about tobacco I went to a Science friend and asked him if he thought I ought to stop smoking. He asked me if I wanted to do so. I told him, "No." I kept on smoking, and about two months afterwards I was sitting in my house alone reading Science and Health. I had a large cigar about half smoked when I seemed to hear, You do not want to smoke any more. Then a small voice within said, No, you do not want to smoke any more. I looked at my cigar, then threw it away. This was about twelve years ago, and never once since then have I had the least desire to smoke.
