The Science of Christianity
Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 4) that "we reach the Science of Christianity through demonstration of the divine nature." Never was a truer statement made than that. Yet it is not new. Jesus taught his disciples constantly of the nature and Mind of Christ, which he acknowledged was the Father working in him, causing him to reflect divine power. He told them again and again that the Mind of Christ is the only Mind, is all that is immortal. His whole ministry was a demonstration of the divine nature; a sublime revelation of infinite divine Love, of the tenderness and compassion of the Christ-spirit, compelling the admiration of even his enemies. He proved that he was the Son of God in the only way it could be proved: by manifesting on every occasion, and under every circumstance, the divine nature.
Christian Science teaches that this divine nature is man's true nature, and that all else is but a supposition of a power, presence, and substance unlike God. This living truth Jesus taught by living the truth daily, hourly, constantly. If he had told his disciples to be loving, compassionate, and just, and had not lived the truth himself, would his teaching have set a new era for the world? Our unity with God is proved in the degree that we exemplify or express our real nature, as truthful, loving, and just in our contact with our brother-man. As we give up our material concepts and express the Christ-qualities, we glorify God in thought, word, and deed.
Our working standpoint in Christian Science is the allness of God and the perfection of God and of man as God's idea. There is no other basis on which to stand, no other truth to demonstrate. False beliefs are silenced as we let the Mind of Christ be in us as it was in Christ Jesus; for then the perfect likeness of God appears. Error is ever an obstruction to the apprehension of man's at-one-ment with God. As long as there seems to be something real to us which is unlike God, God cannot seem to us to be All. The only way error can hold us in bondage is through our accepting wrong thoughts as true and real.
