[Written for the Sentinel]

Patience

Let me not murmur if the night
Seems long.
Let me remember, ere the light,
A song
Of gratitude to Him whose care
Is measureless. If strong in prayer
I wrestle—be it soon or late—
The light will come, if I but wait!

Let me remember how the grass
Hath lain
Earth-close till winter's reges pass,
And rain
And sun their task of love fulfill;
Then, surge of life o'er field and hill
No weight of stone or stubborn clod
Can stay—when nature mirrors God.

So let me, joyous, wait the day
Of Love;
Until its beams shall light the way
Above.
Then shall I learn the vigil long
Was God's design to make me strong;
And I shall know nor time nor space
Can alter or estrange His grace.
