Metaphysical Basis of Peace

It is over twenty years since Mrs. Eddy wrote the prophetic words which appear at the head of the editorial columns of this issue. For many years she had prayed for the abolition of war and that arbitration should take its place; and she told the world so, that men might follow her example and hasten the day of deliverance from the death-dealing scourge. Twenty years is but a brief period in human history; yet, with the right idea dominating, what wonders have been wrought in the time in the changing of human thought and its consequent activities!

Mrs. Eddy's words, to which reference has just been made, come vividly to memory at the present time. For has there not been signed in Paris by the leading nations of the world an agreement which, if honestly adhered to, is bound to do away with war as an instrument to be used in the settlement of differences between nations? Less highly civilized peoples, with a less mature ethical sense, may seek to persist in the use of physical force, and it may in consequence still appear to be necessary on occasion for the more enlightened to hold the primitive instincts and tendencies of the less developed in check by means other than those which they will henceforth use among themselves—hence the necessity of retaining navies and police forces; but, the necessity for the use of these being so very largely eliminated, it is to be hoped—it is to be expected—that the more highly developed nations will find little difficulty in the further in agreeing to the gradual reduction of their armaments, thus ensuring the permanency of the peace of the world.

The Christian Scientist, knowing what true prayer means, and that Mrs. Eddy used it and instructed her followers to use it, see in this great agreement of the nations for peace an answer to scientific prayer. True prayer is not only the desire of the humble, contrite heart that God's will should be done on earth; it likewise includes the affirmation of the truths of Being. When men pray in this manner, nothing can resist their prayers; the forces of evil must go down before them. And this is what is being witnessed in the world to-day. The forces of evil—pride, self-will, self-seeking, envy, jealousy, hatred, revenge, fear—would fain continue to propagate the seeds out of which wars germinate; but the scientific understanding of good and of the nothingness of evil is not only holding these satanic beliefs in check, but is actually bringing about their overthrow.
