Concordia Journal
My attention has recently been called to a sermon published in your paper, entitled, "Going to Hell in Droves," wherein the teachings of Christian Science are attacked and your readers given the wrong impression as to what Mrs. Eddy has said on the subject of the atonement of Christ. It is generally conceded that the Scriptures have both a spiritual and a literal meaning; therefore, to quote what she has said on any subject by the use of detached sentences or clauses separated from their context, is manifestly unfair and unjust, and often conveys a meaning entirely at variance to what was intended—as in this case. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," has said, "Even the Scriptures, which grow in beauty and consistency from one grand root, appear contradictory when subjected to such usage" (Science and Health, p. 341). It would have been easy for our friend to quote Mrs. Eddy correctly and in full. In order that your readers may be properly informed, kindly permit me to do so: "The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. The efficacy of Jesus' spiritual offering is infinitely greater than can be expressed by our sense of human blood. The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon 'the accursed tree,' than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father's business. His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life" (ibid., p. 25). Christian Scientists do not undertake to criticize anyone regarding his interpretation of the Scriptures, but simply because Mrs. Eddy prefers to accept the spiritual import of the word is no justification for misrepresentation. Christian Science is raising up thousands from sickness to health and from sin to holiness, through the practical application of the teachings contained in the Bible and their spiritual significance as revealed in Christian Science.
