In a hotel in a small town in a middle-western state, refuge had been sought from a blizzard which had prevailed many days in the winter of 1917-1918. It was there a wonderful thing happened. Quite as though borne on the wings of the storm, there came to me my first knowledge of Christian Science. What joy to find a God of love, a God who did not inflict punishment in forms of disease with all its attendant ills! This, indeed, was the God I had loved to picture to my fancy from small boyhood to the maturer years of manhood.
Life to me had been ever a mentally stormy existence. My former joyless religious teachings found me rebellious as years of bitter disappointment in all my best endeavors spread their waste behind me. Discouragement, defeat, fear, all concomitants of human beliefs, were the milestones marking my way. Then, that day, the spiritual concept of God as Love, and my first real knowledge of His compassionate, kindly Son, Christ Jesus, came to me!
Every step of the way for several years following this revelation was one of demonstration. It was all very beautiful in its fulfillment. At no time was there even a remote thought of looking back. The past had only dead things. Here was Life, Truth, Love, God in all His goodness, the God I had always wanted to know. Christian Science was indeed the perfect gift from "the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning," and it was for me, even as it is for all of us always.
