"Fidelity to Truth"
On page 22 of "Pulpit and Press," in an article full of wisdom and loving appeal, our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says: "If the lives of Christian Scientists attest their fidelity to Truth, I predict that in the twentieth century every Christian church in our land, and a few in far-off lands, will approximate the understanding of Christian Science sufficiently to heal the sick in his name. Christ will give to Christianity his new name, and Christendom will be classified as Christian Scientists."
This is a statement of tremendous import and inspiration. Yet, perhaps one's reading of it has been casual, and his thought careless in relegating the fulfillment of this prediction to the distant future. Mrs. Eddy did not place this event in the latter part of the twentieth century, but "in the twentieth century;" though its coming, whether sooner or later, must depend upon the Christian Scientists' "fidelity to Truth." This responsibility evidently does not rest alone upon church officials, practitioners, teachers, and lecturers, but must be assumed by the entire body of Christian Scientists throughout the world; for while of itself membership in a Christian Science church does not constitute one a Christian Scientist, it does confer upon one the precious opportunity and lasting obligation to be a Christian Scientist.
Mrs. Eddy never failed to give the encouragement and commendation due to honest effort and achievement; but she did not fail to point out to Christian Scientists the great tasks yet to be accomplished, perhaps lest self-satisfaction rob them of their consecrated zeal and its reward, Likewise, Christian Scientists should be just to themselves. While they may well be grateful for every sign of the times pointing toward the ultimate arrival of the event under consideration, and receive encouragement therefrom, it is wise to remember that they are already well into the twentieth century with this wonderful promise only awaiting their greater "fidelity to Truth" for its fruition.
