Entertaining Angels

In recalling the experience of our Master, just prior to his betrayal and crucifixion, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke, we are reminded that upon his complete surrender of self, expressed in the prayer, "Not my will, but thine, be done," "there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him." This holy example of our beloved Wayshower should inspire with courage and confidence all who would follow in his footsteps.

It is well to understand the word "angel" in its true sense, that we may not err in our recognition of these holy visitants and thereby fail to receive the blessing they would impart. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has said (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 306): "When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch,—it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path!"

We may, perhaps, find ourselves at times laboring under a sense of depression amounting almost to despair; then, with a mighty effort, we lift our thought to God, and lo! there comes to our consciousness a comforting thought, a gleam of encouragement, a sudden conviction of the unreality and powerlessness of the besetting argument, and the assurance that God, good, does reign supreme. This is indeed an angel of His presence, coming to us from heaven, harmony, whose mission it is to light our path out of bondage and to strengthen us.
