Jämtlands Tidning

Kindly permit me through your paper to refer briefly to a writer's reply to corrections of his statements about Christian Science and Mary Baker Eddy in an earlier issue of Jämtlands Tidning. It was not the intention to appear unfriendly in the reply to the writer; indeed, quite the contrary. Christian Scientists feel very kindly toward those who fail to grasp the teachings of Christian Science, for many of them held the same mistaken views about it until, impelled by some great human need, they sought its compassionate help. It seems reasonable, however, to expect that one who would instruct others in a given subject should himself understand and abide by the statements of its textbook and teach therefrom. Christian Scientists feel perfectly justified in referring to their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in using complete quotations from it in order to confirm their statements on the subject of Christian Science. One of the duties of a Committee on Publication (which by the way is not a propaganda committee) is to correct, as far as possible, misrepresentations of the teachings of Christian Science which appear in the press. Christian Science is not by any means the weak, illogical, contradictory subject its opponents represent it to be. The purpose of this religion is to bless all mankind; and in order to fulfill this high mission it must be, and is, consistent throughout, in both theory and practice. It is therefore reasonable that Christian Scientists demand that it be correctly stated.
