Honesty

As God's perfect spiritual creation unfolds to the earnest seeker for Truth, he perceives a deeper significance in every good quality of character. Of such qualities, perhaps none takes on a brighter luster in the light of reality than honesty. A dictionary has defined "honesty" as "freedom from guile or fraud;" and because mankind has ever sought to know the genuine, honesty has been prized by the noble and true in every age. It has been the happy mission, however, of Christian Science to give to the world a new and higher standard of honesty; for Christian Science has revealed the glorious truth about God and man—man created in the image and likeness of God, forever free from the fraudulent claims of sin and death. How evident it becomes that our allegiance to the true standard must be unswerving and whole-hearted if we would have our concept of man changed from that of a sick, sinful mortal to that of man as perfect and eternal!

A student of Christian Science struggling with a belief of physical discord that seemed very tenacious, found his freedom by endeavoring to be truly honest each day. Hour by hour every argument of error was answered in the light of his new concept of man. A consecrated and continuous effort was made to recognize as fraudulent every claim of matter to intelligence and power. How great was his joy when health was manifested and a higher view of Truth won, proving, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 453), that "honesty is spiritual power"!

As we joyously demonstrate exemption from sickness and sin for ourselves, if we are honest we must claim like exemption for our brother. Only the qualities of good belong to man; and since this is an incontrovertible fact, we may have complete dominion over every belief of evil. It is by clinging to this fact that we can realize the ever-presence of divine Love, our Father-Mother God, who knows the unvarying perfection of each of His children. The understanding of this truth will finally bring us into possession of the heart-satisfying knowledge that we love God "because he first loved us."
