In September, 1908, I began the study of Christian Science, not with the thought of learning more of God, but for the purpose of regaining health. After I had read the first chapter in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the true concept of prayer dawned upon my consciousness, and I felt that Christian Science is indeed the Comforter promised by Jesus. When I later read on page 55 of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy says, "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science," tears of repentance and joy flooded my eyes, and I began to read and ponder with a higher motive.
In a short time, with the help of a practitioner constant study of Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, chronic bilious attacks, extreme nervousness, skin disorder, and other ailments were overcome, and I was able to take a position and attend to my duties regularly; whereas before, I had been home a great deal on account of illness. I was very grateful for this; and as soon as I received my first pay check I began to purchase the different writings by Mrs. Eddy, to attend the church services regularly, and to subscribe for the Journal, Sentinel, and Monitor.
An experience about a year and a half ago brought to me a clearer realization of the truth of the statement in Science and Health (p. 469), "If mortals claimed no other Mind and accepted no other, sin would be unknown." Two men came into our place of business one evening and ordered some goods, but instead of paying for them leveled a gun at my husband. Looking round I saw the gun and what they were attempting to do. It came to me instantly that in reality there was no evil influence or power to impel them to rob us. I talked to them for a few moments, and they turned and left without taking anything. My husband and I were both very grateful for this proof of God's protecting power.
