God Elects

Christian Scientists are not politicians in the commonly accepted sense of the term, but they strive to follow the example of their Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who wrote (see page 276 of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany): "I am asked, 'What are your politics?' I have none, in reality, other than to help support a righteous government; to love God supremely, and my neighbor as myself." As the time for an election approaches, be it in church, state, or nation, the Christian Scientist does his part by realizing that in this, as in all things, nothing should interfere with the fulfilment of God's law operating in the affairs of men to bring out the highest and best results.

Is the Christian Scientist wondering who will be the next Readers and directors of his church, the next governor of his state, the next President of the Federal government? or is he faithfully knowing that these are questions for scientific demonstration? Is he realizing that God manifests Himself through right ideas?

The newspapers frequently discuss what are called "presidential possibilities," and it is well to keep ourselves informed on all subjects of interest to mankind. A dictionary gives as one definition of "possibility," "a thing or event that may or may not happen;" and it further points out the contrast between "possible" and actual or certain.

Now the actual, certain, or real fact, as contrasted with a possibility, is that God's ideas already exist according to His infinite wisdom and under His loving protection, and that mere human opinion cannot annul God's authority. To know this will guide us to take the proper human footsteps in order to bring out the highest sense of right. If a class of children who have correctly studied the science of mathematics were asked by their teacher the answer to a certain problem, would they not all give the same answer with one accord? No doubt, no hesitation, no guesswork—the science of mathematics would reveal to them the correct answer. Should not we who daily study the Science of being expect to have revealed to us the solution of each moral or ethical problem as the need arises, so that we too may respond in unified expression, thus manifesting the one Mind?

When we realize that God alone governs and directs all real activities, we shall have the highest expression of Reader, director, governor, or President; and wisdom shall thus be "justified of her children." Indeed, we shall be able to say with Paul: "Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth."
