When Christian Science was first brought to my attention,...
When Christian Science was first brought to my attention, I was in a state of health bordering upon invalidism. My case had been diagnosed by several physicians as an organic trouble requiring a major operation, with no assurance of a permanent recovery. The condition was followed by partial paralysis, rendering me unable to raise my right hand to my head or even to cut my food. At this time I was holding a position where it was necessary for me to do much writing, and I was very much discouraged. It was then that several relatives and friends, both near me and in the West, suggested that I try Christian Science. My first step was to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. As I had never know anything of Christian Science prior to that night, it was indeed very wonderful to me. That same week I visited a practitioner; and well do I recall that visit. The love and assurance that she radiated convinced me that she possessed something that I certainly needed and wanted. Thus man's extremity proved to be God's opportunity.
My healing was not instantaneous, although I can say that from the first visit to the practitioner much of the pain I had suffered for many months rapidly disappeared, and this gave me great hope of a permanent healing. An instance of this healing stands out well in my memory. I had been suffering from insomnia, and I told the practitioner that I had not slept an entire night in eight weeks. I went to bed that night and slept soundly, not awakening until the sun streamed across my face the next morning. This was to me proof positive that some power was in operation, as before coming to Christian Science I had been taking heavy opiates to induce sleep. In a very short time I was fully recovered from the paralytic condition; and the other ailments, including the organic trouble and a floating kidney, for which I had worn a support, soon followed, as I continued to study and put in practice the truth as I was able to comprehend it.
That was in 1907. Since then I have been healed of a broken knee cap, of a severe case of blood poisoning, of headaches from which I had suffered for years, and of financial trouble. I am indeed grateful for the physical healings, but far greater is my gratitude for the spiritual healing and the clear and comforting understanding of God. I had been so unhappy because I believed God was punishing me for some wrong I had done in my ignorance or otherwise, and I could not reconcile this with the verse that reads, "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." I could not picture an earthly parent afflicting a child or permitting him to suffer, even if he had transgressed some parental law; but I learned in Christian Science that "the Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death," as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 140 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
