Right Thinking

HUMAN thought is constantly dwelling on something, either good or bad; and always thought-processes represent ceaseless activity. Memory often leads back into the past, and we review experiences, pleasant or unpleasant, which we have had in days long gone by. Or thought may take us into the future, and paint for us bright pictures, on which we gaze with pleased anticipation; or sometimes fear or dread of some future event may seem to hold us enchained, blinding us to the truth at hand.

Until we come into Christian Science, we may pay very little attention to these mental processes, believing them to have small influence on our everyday life. After taking up the study of Christian Science, however, we find it a wise plan to keep strict watch over these flying shuttles of thought; for the allness of God must predominate, and His love be seen to govern all. On page 261 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

Upon examining our thoughts carefully, we see that discouragement, despondency, and depression can bring us only bad results; while joy, gratitude, and love for our brother encourage us, and bring us into green pastures of contentment and peace. This examination of our thinking and the mental effort to eliminate that which is wrong in it are seemingly difficult tasks at first, and in our own strength cannot be accomplished. It is firm reliance on God's strength and on Godgiven ability which meets this need, and helps us to rise above the crowding arguments of evil to unite with God's purpose for every one of His children. The prophet Isaiah tells us, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." This is God's desire for every one of us; and we cannot be kept from living in accord with this truth.
