This letter is written to correct any misapprehension in the minds of your readers concerning the teachings of Christian Science on the subject of prohibition, which might have arisen from the perusal of an article appearing as a news item in your columns recently. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has plainly stated on page 454 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that "the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science;" also, on page 289 of "Miscellaneous Writings" "Strong drink is unquestionably an evil, and evil cannot be used temperately: its slightest use is abuse; hence the only temperance is total abstinence." In evidence of the attitude of loyal Christian Scientists toward the subject of prohibition, the Board of Directors of the Christian Science movement as established and perpetuated by Mrs. Eddy, in fulfillment of Mrs. Eddy's injunction to uphold law, went on record recently before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee as upholding the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and deploring any attempt to make more liberal the Volstead Act.
