Eight years ago last Christmas I turned to Christian Science for healing, and since that time every day has been a Christmas to me. For years I had been subject to violent headaches. Each time I would have to call a physician, and would be in bed for several days. On this day (which was Christmas eve) I began to manifest a headache. A few days previous I had noticed the name "Christian Science Reading Room" in the telephone directory, and the thought came to me: Why not try Christian Science? It was the "still small voice." No one had spoken to me about it, and I knew nothing whatever about Christian Science; but I went to the telephone and called the Reading Room. The librarian gave me the names of several practitioners, and I selected the one living nearest to me. I called her, told her of my trouble, and asked her if she could heal me. She said, "No, I cannot; but God can." Then she told me about God, a God so different from the one I had been taught to fear! She told me of the God who is Love, the God who is always present and who has all power, the God who is "a very present help in trouble," who "healeth all thy diseases." Then she asked me to read the ninety-first psalm.

When I hung up the receiver the headache was gone. I had never been so happy in my life. I read over and over again the ninety-first psalm, and each time I read it, it became more beautiful. The day after Christmas I purchased a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to study to find out more about God and about man in His image and likeness.

I shall never forget my first demonstration. One night I had put my baby to bed and was reading aloud to my husband when the baby began screaming as if in agony. I ran to his bed and took him up, and found that he was drawn with pain. My first impulse was to call for help. And then the thought came: It is God who heals, and He is right here, right now; there is no other power or presence. Instantly the child relaxed, and in a few minutes was sleeping peacefully. That was the first time I fully realized what it means to praise the Lord. Since that time I have had innumerable proofs of God's love and care, of His ever-presence and all-power. I was healed of rheumatism of several years' standing. My baby was instantly healed of chicken pox. I am trying to live my gratitude, and am striving to let that Mind be in me "which was also in Christ Jesus." During the past eight years our only physician has been the Great Physician, and He has never failed us. We have made many mistakes, but have profited by each one of them. There have been times when the way has seemed very dark, and we have seemed to pass through the deep waters; but these words from Isaiah have comforted me: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."
