In 1908 Christian Science found me a very much discouraged...
In 1908 Christian Science found me a very much discouraged and hopeless invalid, as I had suffered for almost ten years from stubborn abdominal disorders, accompanied with extreme nervousness. The intestines seemed to be paralyzed. At one time I was bedfast for nine months; and later, at different intervals, especially during the winter months, I had to stay in bed for weeks at a time. Four systems of healing were given a trial, but none brought complete relief. Finally, I was advised to go to a milder climate, as we were then living in the state of Iowa.
We came to California; and here, a fruitless search for over a year, I became acquainted with Christian Science through a dear neighbor, who first presented it to me. Knowing little of this new religion myself, I hesitated to accept it or even give it a trial, as according to the teachings of the church which I had been attending all my life, it seemed not in accord with my beliefs, and I did not wish to do anything which might hinder me from future salvation.
I had never read any Christian Science literature, hence did not know what it really was. I argued that if God wished to heal me, He could do so without the aid of Christian Science; therefore I decided that I would rely only on God, and give up all drugs and doctors! This I did. The sufferings, however, did not cease, but instead increased. One day, when I seemed to be in great agony from extreme nervousness, and it seemed almost unbearable, I arose from my bed and knelt down and prayed, "O God, help me, relieve me; and if Thou canst not relieve me, let me die; or should there be some other way for me to follow, should it be Christian Science, then show it to me in some way, if this be right for me, and I shall be willing to follow!" Soon after that my brother wanted to call a doctor; but I told him, "No more doctors; but if you want to do something for me, please call the Christian Science neighbor over." This he did. She declared the truth to me, and immediately I became quiet and a wonderful peace came over me. In a short time I arose from my bed and attended to my household duties. It was a revelation to me. God had indeed shown me the way. I now knew that Christian Science must teach me the way, the truth, and the life. I discarded at once an abdominal support which I had been wearing for ten years, and in earnest began to study Mrs. Eddy's textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." After I had read the first chapter, that on Prayer, I knew that this was just what I had been looking for during so many years. I began to improve rapidly, and gained strength and courage; whereas before, I had lived in constant fear from one day to the next.
