No objection is hereby made to the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Grantwood, who, in his address, published in your recent issue, calls his satanic majesty names, because the talking, lying serpent spoken of in Genesis is a nonentity! Such a thing as a talking, lying serpent is unknown to Truth. This is the lie that whispered to Eve, "Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil," as the minister says. Objection is made, however, and justly, to the pastor's saying that the "accursed lie is the root of many of the damnable doctrines of to-day such as have grown out of the ouija board, spiritualism, Christian Science, modernism, and others." Please let me state that Christian Science is the Word of God to this age. It is what Christ Jesus taught and practiced; and the great good already accomplished by it proves that it is the truth that Jesus promised would make men free.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 584 gives the definition of "devil": "Evil; a lie; error; neither corporeality nor mind; the opposite of Truth; a belief in sin, sickness, and death; animal magnetism or hypnotism; the lust of the flesh, which saith: "I am life and intelligence in matter. There is more than one mind, for I am mind,—a wicked mind, self-made or created by a tribal god and put into the opposite of mind, termed matter, thence to reproduce a mortal universe, including man, not after the image and likeness of Spirit, but after its own image.'" This indicates that Mrs. Eddy's revelation of Truth, called Christian Science, is teaching mortals to make the separation of the true from the false, of the good from the evil, and is thereby establishing the kingdom of heaven on earth. Again, Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 466): "The Science of Christianity comes with fan in hand to separate the chaff from the wheat. Science will declare God aright, and Christianity will demonstrate this declaration and its divine Principle, making mankind better physically, morally, and spiritually."

The minister implies that the miracles performed by "these sects" are the lying wonders performed by Satan. This is similar to the accusation made against Jesus, namely, "He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils." Now the healing and regenerative works wrought by Christian Science are accomplished in the same way, or by the same rules, that they were accomplished by Jesus' immediate followers; for "the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save." True, in II Thessalonians, second chapter, the writer uses the expression "lying wonders;" but note that this refers to evil works, not good works, for the writer states in preceding verses that "the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming."
