The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Norfolk, Virginia (First Church).

Lecturer: William W. Porter; introduced by Mrs. Helen Gary, who said:—

It is with a deep sense of gratitude I can say that for the past nine years Christian Science has been my only physician. It has healed me of many erroneous conditions, physical and mental; and the joy and hope that it brings into my life daily are hard to express in words. Human thought devises many ways and means to bring peace and happiness to striving humanity, but all in vain. Christian Science has come to us to teach us more about God and our relation to Him. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has given us in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," many rules whereby we may be guided and protected; and these rules, if honestly and consistently followed, will enable us to prove the healing power of Christ, Truth. On page 462 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every statement, and advance from the rudiments laid down." She goes on to say, further, "There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life."
