Christian Science came into my life quite unexpectedly...

Christian Science came into my life quite unexpectedly several years ago, when the outlook before me was intensely black and gloomy. I had suffered for nearly seven years from fatty degeneration of the heart and incipient sclerosis following on paralysis of the spinal nerves; and although I was not completely crippled, I was exhausted after walking a few steps. The reports of my physicians were very discouraging, and I felt condemned to my couch, my bed, or my wheel chair for the remainder of my life.

In February, 1922, a Scientist friend came to stay with us. I volunteered to accompany her to the Sunday evening service, to which my son wheeled me in my chair. After the service was over, a gentleman whom I had met some years previously told me of his freedom from valvular disease of the heart through reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and of another's complete recovery from asthma.

I attended the Wednesday and Sunday evening services, but did not see the textbook until the following Tuesday. When any difficulty presented itself my cry often was, "Oh, Lord, give me the understanding I long for." This was wonderfully answered, and on the twelfth morning I had a marvelous experience. While I was waiting in the garden to be wheeled out in my chair, a voice at my side said, "Go on!" It was so definite that I felt obliged to obey, and started off quite alone, without even a stick to help me. When doubt and fear assailed me, the Comforter was at hand: "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" And again, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee"! These encouraging words inspired me with greater confidence, so I walked on for about twenty yards. Again fear tried to upset me, but I heard,
