On Christmas Eve I thought I should spend the evening in...
On Christmas Eve I thought I should spend the evening in quiet preparation for a busy day by reading. Picking up the Sentinel, I noticed the request printed on the wrapper, "Postmaster please deliver to subscriber December 24, 1926." It proved to be a peaceful companion for several hours and was filled with the true spirit of giving. I thought, This is a most prized gift.
A vivid picture of another Christmas Eve came to my consciousness. In the year 1895 the present which pleased me most was a copy of "Unity of Good" by Mary Baker Eddy. Prejudice against Christian Science had been sufficiently overcome for my mother to have treatment. Hope had taken the place of gloom in her thought, and she manifested marked improvement. When my father was told, he said, "The medicine has just begun to take effect." He took my copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from me, and told me that no more Christian Science literature was to be brought into the home. The best medical aid failed to effect a cure, and my mother passed away. The Comforter, however, came to me, and I can never forget the wonderful experience of being mentally uplifted. My father, a strong character, and the other members of the family all seemed to depend on me. Later the textbook was returned to me with the admonition to be sensible and read it only occasionally!
Through the study and application of the rule on page 261, lines 4-7, of Science and Health, all my diseases disappeared as unconsciously as night fades into dawn. This occurred within a period of two years, during which time I specialized in mathematics, English, music, and read besides only Christian Science literature. Since the word "repent" means to think differently, I was able to resign my position in the public schools and to discontinue my activity in the Episcopal church and society.
