Your correspondent queries the statement that hell is a state of mind. God, Spirit, is everywhere. Heaven is where God is; and because God is everywhere, heaven must be everywhere also. The belief in an opposite to heaven is all there is of hell. Hell is with us only so long as we fail to understand the everywhereness of God and heaven. The belief that "goodness cannot be known without its opposite evil" is largely responsible for the seeming reality of evil. The Bible states, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity;" and the consciousness of those who have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus" must be equally pure. Heaven, then, is the true, pure state of consciousness; and when this state is reached there will be no consciousness of an opposite or hell. Mrs. Eddy writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 267): "Heaven is spiritual. Heaven is harmony,—infinite, boundless bliss." And she adds, "Our great Teacher hath said: 'Behold, the kingdom of God is within you'—within man's spiritual understanding of all the divine modes, means, forms, expression, and manifestation of goodness and happiness."
