The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Norman, Oklahoma (First Church).

Lecturer: Salem Andrew Hart; introduced by Fayette Copeland, Jr., who said:—

In scores of Christian Science churches throughout the United States and in foreign countries may be found two inscriptions. The first of these, from I John, reads, "God is love." The second, from page 494 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." These statements reveal the nature of the religion which Jesus taught and demonstrated more than nineteen hundred years ago, and the interpretation which is being given it by Christian Scientists throughout the world to-day. Christian Science first became known to my family more than twenty years ago, when I was quickly healed of a complication of stomach and intestinal diseases after three physicians had reported that I could not possibly live. Since that time this religion of love has been our constant help. Through the light which it has shed upon the teachings of the Bible we have been able to overcome many claims of physical ailments and worry. One member of my family was healed of a broken bone overnight through Christian Science treatment. And yet the many physical healings have been only a small part of the blessings of Christian Science. The greatest blessing has been the spiritual peace which has come through the teachings of the Bible in the light of the Christian Science textbook. Christian Science has been a haven of rest in the storm. It has proved to be the rod and the staff which comforted us when we stood in the deepest valley.
