The Great Physician
The Great Physician is God; and the whole world will yet come to know the fact, and acknowledge it. It was not Christian Science that first declared God to be the healer of disease and sin. In the Old Testament He is freely spoken of as such; and Christ Jesus not only understood Him to be the great healing power, but actually demonstrated his understanding of God by healing all manner of disease and sin among the people.
In the Psalms, to quote but a few references to God as the healer of the woes of mankind, it is written: "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions;" "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds;" and God is also referred to therein as He "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." In Jeremiah the words occur, "I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord." And we cannot forget the command of Christ Jesus, the great Way-shower, to the twelve apostles whom he sent forth to carry forward the work he had started, recorded by Matthew: "And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils."
It is impossible to think of God in a right way without acknowledging His power to heal. More than any other who has lived on earth Christ Jesus made use of this divine power, taught his disciples concerning it, and how to demonstrate it even as he did. Not only so, but the Master expected that it would continue to be understood and used by his followers ever afterwards. History would seem to indicate that for upwards of three centuries at the beginning of the Christian era, spiritual healing was practiced among Christians. Then it ceased to be part of Christian endeavor, unless spasmodically, until its Science was discovered by Mrs. Eddy in 1866, a little over sixty years ago. Since then the Christian Science movement, which she founded, has brought it to the notice of the world through its literature and by the testimony of those who themselves have been healed.
