Facing Our Problem

The student endeavoring to progress in the understanding of Christian Science in an environment unkindly disposed toward the truth as discovered and taught by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, may think another home, or possibly another city, would help to bring more rapid growth. One laboring with sickness or some other claim of mortal mind which is slowly yielding to the operation of divine Love, may also be inclined to attribute the tardy demonstration to the thoughts entertained by friends and relatives who do not yet understand that the power of God can heal every discordant condition.

Biblical accounts recording Jesus' works do not indicate that the Master considered it necessary to remove the one to be healed to another location in order to effect the demonstration. Rather do they tend to show that the Way-shower, and his disciples as well, performed the healing wherever the afflicted one happened to be. Lazarus was raised from the grave right at the place where he lay, and the one lame from birth was healed right at the gate of the temple called Beautiful, where he sat.

The child assigned a mathematical problem for solution does not, if guided rightly, and will not, if he is obedient to such guidance, attempt to find the answer by placing distance between himself and the blackboard whereon the problem has been written. By assiduous application of his understanding, coupled with such qualities as steadfastness and patience, he endeavors to work out the problem; nor does he relinquish his efforts until the correct answer is achieved. It is significant that his position is squarely in front of the blackboard, where he can face the problem, see it for what it is, and set to work directly to find the answer. On page 3 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal notation "The spiritual mathematics," Mrs. Eddy writes, "Who would stand before a blackboard, and pray the principle of mathematics to solve the problem?" And then follows the succinct statement, "The rule is already established, and it is our task to work out the solution."
